Ok, so turns out I'll spend Wednesday evening/night and most of Thursday in London and don't really know what exactly to do (except exploiting the current euros<=>pounds rate of course ;).

Anyone got any ideas what to do on a Wednesday night in London? Or even being there and willing to spend time? :)

UPDATE: Seems like there's something demoscenish going on now: http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=6262 :)

Yeah, I really feel bad that I'm using my own LJ only for announcing and advertising things. But at least I'm still there and reading all y00r stuffs. Yes.

Anyway, to put it short: I had to get a song idea out of my mind, a demoparty was due, I had a few days off, so I made this:

Back from Budapest.

And before I decide to write a lengthy post and then can't get my arse in shape to actually pull it through, I'll keep it short but existing :)

The weekend was awesome. The F08 location is really nice, and in it quite a cool demoparty unfolded. Of course release wise it was about on track with other small parties this year (apart from the winning Still demo that definitely stood out and two very nice 4k exe graphics entries) but the atmosphere was ace. Lots of friendly people, some very cool presentations by iq and Bonzaj, I finally got around to coding some stuff at the party.. and of course the usual lot of booze and resulting from that some very strange occurrences (<- click that link and follow if you dare. I'm not so stupid to embed that here :)

Oh, and after the party hanging out with the international bunch of sceners that haven't left yet, and some tourist stuff on Monday.

So, greetings to everyone I met (iq, Reptile, Mentor and Blueberry, Kusma, Pixtur+GF, Cynic (as Ryg Impersonator), Bonzaj and Kinga, D-Lee, Gina+snowkrash, BoyC and some other people that I probably forgot about) and first of all thanks to [info]gargaj, [info]trx007 and Maxie for being so excellent hosts and guides. Also, spikeball \o/

Yes, trips like these make you feel good. See you all at Function 09 or something :)

First part of the Vienna log ;)

Thursday: "Absolut nichts kann schiefgehen *krkz* schiefgehen *krkz* schiefgehen ..."

Apart from Chaos' full-on panic mode concerning arriving on time at the airport (which Murphy decided to ridicule by delaying the departure by half an hour) Thursday turned out to be pretty eventless. We went to a few bars at the "Gürtel" with Gina and her brother and listened to some interesting Concerto for Jackhammer and Excavator courtesy of the Austrian railway company. The night was ended after two additional bottles of wine at Gina's place.

One thing about the flight tho: It's a nice sign of things to come when at the exact moment the flight attendant says "please turn off all electronic devices" all the lights in the plane go out for half a second, and after that all cabin electronics seem to have crashed completely, leaving the in flight entertainment system screens in a state that would've brought gleeful expressions to the faces of all scene artyfaggots out there (and it took them three minutes to get that thing to show that safety training video). Yes, thank you, I'll turn off that cell phone; that was demonstration enough. :)

Friday: Ehre, Diziplin, Tradition, Autorität und Übermacht ("Mix Heil")

So. "The big day". The day Chaos and I were invited to speak at the monthly Demoscene Meeting held by the [d]vision folks. After 'rehearsing', also known as talking about a few bullet points that Chaos has prepared and making a few screenshots of our tools, at least I finally decided to simply do whatever my weird state of mind would tell me to. We were urged not to make it too technical or serious anyway, so a mixture between anecdotes and actual information sounded promising. Oh, and I thought I'd offset Chaos' often dead serious style a bit by being generally irritating.

Off to the WerkzeugH, a really nice bar/event location in almost-central Vienna (with a name that definitely screamed for us to hold a talk there ;) where the Demoscene Meetings are held. At first we were unable to set up stuff because some local art types decided to overrun their designated time slot and were even upset when we were at least trying to set up the A/V stuff. But well, that made things feel somewhat familiar from the beginning, so it probably wasn't that bad, and there were enough Austrian sceners outside to kill the time until we were finally allowed to start.

And after I managed to suppress my pain about the horrible image quality of the projector (all due to shitty cabling and not being able to prepare in time) we were able to open our talk by showing Debris and, as my good Italian friend Fabio once said, set the mood for the night ;)

And then, knowing that we're in Austria, I started talking about stuff that Austrian people really can relate to:

As planned, we were instantly liked by the audience, so we were then able to say stuff about 64ks and our tools, what they do, and why we used them, without anyone falling asleep. So far, so good. Only thing that was left was admitting my epic fail at attempting to code a speech synthesizer that people would be able to understand. I circumvented this by correcting a design mistake in the intro in question: Most people who complained about Candytron's unintelligible lyrics forget that all other intros always show the texts that are spoken on screen to make the listener think he understood at least something. We, for some unknown reason (or make this "known reason, but I don't want to let my wrath rain onto my groupmates now") didn't. So, there was only one chance to remedy that situation:

I don't know if that really helped, most people in the audience were too busy laughing. But anyway, after talking somewhat more about tools vs. hardcoding and parties (we showed "Kite & Tracker - teH Fut4r3 Krü" to let the people know what demoparties are really about) the following round of Q&A was unexpectedly long and deep. Seems that people really have listened.

That feeling continued after we were done and started boozing at the WerkzeugH, people really talked to us and there were lots of interesting conversations. In the end we (Chaos, myself, Gina, Paralax and [info]mynnia, Peci and others) left for a goth club called "Pi" where according to rumours Thomas Rainer of L'Ame Immortelle fame was there (people who know me might remember what, uh, "connects" me to him :). Turns out he wasn't but that didn't stop us from compensating for this sad fact by pouring Absinthe into our very bodies. In the end only Paralax, Mynnia and I were left, and after some additional boozing, eating and writing threatening messages into the club's guestbook (an actual physical one even) everyone was going home and Chaos' very rhythmic snoring quickly soothed me into sleep.

Please stay tuned for:

Saturday: Geschichte, Kraft, Geschmack, Aufrichtigkeit, Konsequenz, Leben und Pork

... and the rest. :)

Yay.

That surely was a great, exhausting weekend in Vienna, full of sceners, art types, art, sun, alc, weed, sociological studies, parties, stupid nazi jokes, lots of Premium Cola, pork, hangovers, singing the Bubble Bobble theme in the middle of a goth club full of uniform wearing people, games, electronics, tourist stuff, emotional baggage, more tea, short films and animations, 64k intro karaoke and sooo much more.

This really needs to be written down in a detailed way. Still have to sort all those memories (along with the WGT ones) but expect a bigger update very soon at the other side of the sleep that's awaiting me.

Until then:

Lost in Translation [Mar. 15th, 2007|08:54 am]

... Well. Most of my LJ idleness (apart from a few comments and the one or other occasional LJ drama because I forgot that you simply don't expose vain and self-righteous US bitches as what they are.. seriously, don't. Still amusing tho how Ms. Eloquency Herself was suddenly down to "STFU" as her sole counter argument :) comes from the high "noteworthiness/laziness" ratio I apply every time the thought of updating this thing crosses my mind... and in most cases I simply just don't want to bore you with the details of my daily life, most of you seem to have one youself, so why bother :)

Still, sometimes something noteworthy happens - as in this case.

I'm back in Singapore. For those who wonder how i can be "back" when I haven't been there before, here's a short recap of my original plans for march: Fly to Singapore on March 6th to visit [info]sir_yoda for almost a week, then on March 12th off to Tokyo to visit [info]sheitana for a week, then one week later back home with one day of Singapore in between just because two return flights are about half as cheap as three one-way ones. So far, so good.

Everything was quite well planned and prepared, holidays granted, all tickets bought, financial situation managed, people in the respective towns knew that I'd be coming for weeks...

... or so I thought.

Well, the fist Singapore part went pretty smooth actually. Except that I've seemingly forgot the charger for my laptop (which was solved by transplanting my HD into [info]sir_yoda's old laptop) and that I've got probably the worst sunburn I"ve had since I turned all gawth, those days were pretty neat. Sun, a very nice town, palmtrees, beaches (full of the other things that are phonetically similar), lounging at the beach club pool, partying in those very modern/expensive clubs.

And then I've tried to take on the second part of the trip.

The first rather major issue I was encountering upon arriving at Narita Airport was entirely my own fault - I let my normal bank account hit Ground Zero in the last week and placed my trust into my credit card to get me through the rest of the month. Which would've worked, if either I still knew it"s PIN to withdraw some cash at an ATM, or if there'd been a single bank or change facility at the airport which would have allowed to do the same without the PIN - which is pretty much standard all over the world. Not so in Tokyo. So basically I was sitting there in the arrivals hall with the 5 Euros and 10 SG Dollars I still had in my wallet and there was no chance to go somewhere else.

But I had credit card payable internet access and so was able to find my bank's phone no., wait until it was 9AM in Germany and beg for some more credit on my account. After some careful pleas and the bank rep chuckling because she found it too funny imagining me sitting at that airport all alone and emo this was solved, I could withdraw some money and finally go into the city and find [info]sheitana.

To put things short. I didn't. This time it was not exactly my fault because I even found the house that seemingly belonged to the address she's given me. There were only a few smaller issues left:
  • she hasn't told me which of the 40 apartments in that house it was (no number, no name to look for, nothing)

  • she refused to answer any phone calls

  • same with emails, SMS (though those probably didn't work anyway), attempts tries to IM her etc.

So basically I was standing somewhere in the south west of central Tokyo with just me, my bag and some money and had absolutely no idea what to do next. Only thing I knew is that I somehow had to survive for a week because then my flight back would go.

The evening and night was then spent waiting in the neighborhood hoping I could somewhow catch her, calling her again and again and again, and then eventually giving up and calling everyone else I knew either lived in Tokyo or could know a cheap hotel I could sleep at for the next night(s). Eventually I got a hotel recommendation and after some cooperation with a taxi driver who neither knew any English nor could read the roman letters the hotel address was written in, I was able to check in and fall asleep. Or let's call that "asleep" because my heart frequency was WAY to high that night to really sleep.

That hotel was nice actually - everything down to the bare minimum but cheap, very friendly and at least you could get along in English without any problems :)

Next day, again with a little help from [info]sir_yoda (who booked the SG<->JP flights for me, thanks by the way), I was able to change my flight back to an earlier day and thus decided to stay only for one day, sleep one night and then fly back. Of course a few minutes later after this was settled someone I knew (Mr Hill, ex Acorn scener and now working for nVidia in Tokyo) called and asked me if I still needed a place to stay for the week. Thank you very, VERY much, Murphy. But I still felt so disappointed and left alone that I figured one day here is enough now and I"ll give Tokyo a second chance at some later point, and this time without relying on anyone THAT known for being unreliable. Well, no risk, no fun - next time I know better.

Anyway. Met a nice couple from Germany and Switzerland at the hotel lobby and after some chat with _her_ about _realtime particle dynamics systems_ (i mean, seriously, WTF :) they told me a few places worth exploring, and so I set off on my own and had a quite nice day there. The evening was spent with Mr Hill and one of his coworkers dining in a french restaurant and then hitting some bars, so in the end of that day my mood was back to "happily drunk" again and hooray, I was even able to sleep :)

Well, then one day basically spent idling in the hotel lobby, on a train, at the airport, on a plane and then back in [info]sir_yoda's home, and then today. Let's see what's up. :)

Edit because I forgot: Of course I haven't been able to reach [info]sheitana yet - she'd better have a really good excuse.

[.np |tv]

It's kinda disconcerting when you start typing a LJ post to inform the world of new things you've done with the sole purpose of reaping pleasant feedback from your peers and then you realize that this is precisely the only kind of updates you've given for the last few months; and it's even worse when you realize that this is simply because your current life lacks anything extraordinary enough to be worth writing down.

But well, that may change in the future.

In the meantime let's continue with the original intention: A few months ago [info]sheitana and I decided to try making music together before she went off to that country full of cute underage looking Japanese boys. We met and the first thing that happened is that neither of us was able to resist that small bag of weed lying on my table and staring at us invitingly :)

The one or other hour of being stoned later we remembered the original plan for the night and went over to my computer. And of course all plans to do something serious seemed utterly boring and we simply started doing stuff that we found funny. [info]sheitana started to make up completely senseless Japanese lyrics, and I went on my quest for fitting sounds and melodies.

To put it short: In the last few nights I finally finished the song, and we decided to share the result with the world. So without any further hesitation I'm, uh, proud to present you

Doctor Retroid vs. Mavi - tako o guroumasen

The song is licensed under a Creative Commons license, so feel free to download and share it with whoever you want :)
